Why It’s Important to Pick Up After Your Pets

Picking up after your pooch is more than just a courtesy to your neighbors — it’s also being a good neighbor to area lakes, ponds and rivers. Picking up pet waste is required by law in your community.
Pet waste is considered a stormwater pollutant—or illicit discharge— because it can contain harmful bacteria and nutrients such as phosphorus that cause excess algae and weed growth. Local regulations require all pet waste to be properly removed from public properties including parks, streets, and sidewalks and disposed of properly in the trash.
By preventing pet waste from entering our storm drains and ditches, you are protecting our drinking water sources.
So, every time you reach for the leash, remember to grab a small plastic bag for the road to dispose of pet waste in the trash. It’s one simple thing you can do to help keep the water clean.
